Data

How our data works.

Where Outpost Leads gets its business listings, what the ownership and verification filters mean, and what they can't tell you.

Method

Where listings come from

Every business in Outpost Leads is a Google Maps listing. We get listings through a third-party data provider that maintains a database of Google Maps places across the United States.

When you search, you choose a city, a state and one of our business categories. Results are the listings in that place and category that match your filters.

What each result includes

  • Business name, photo and address
  • Google star rating and number of reviews
  • Phone number and website link, when the listing has them
  • Ownership attributes the owner has added
  • Whether the Google Business Profile is verified

Ownership attributes

Business owners can add "From the business" attributes to their Google Business Profile, such as "Identifies as women-owned." Outpost Leads can filter on eight of them: women-, Black-, Latino-, Asian-, veteran-, LGBTQ+-, Indigenous- or disabled-owned.

These attributes are self-reported. They are not certifications such as MBE, WBE or VOSB. If a program you work with requires certification, confirm it with the certifying organization.

We never infer ownership. A business that hasn't added an attribute won't appear under that filter, even if it would qualify.

Google Business Profile verification

A verified Google Business Profile is one whose owner has confirmed to Google that they manage it. A profile that isn't verified may have no active owner, which is often why its details are incomplete or out of date.

Freshness and limits

Listings reflect the data provider's copy of Google Maps, so a change a business makes on Google can take time to show up. Hours, phone numbers and websites change; check before you rely on a detail.

Use the data the way you'd use any public listing: to find and research businesses, and to contact them in line with the laws that apply to your outreach, such as the CAN-SPAM Act and the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.

Questions

Where does the business data come from?

Business listings come from Google Maps, through a third-party data provider that maintains a database of Google Maps places. Each result shows the details the business has on its public listing.

Are ownership tags the same as certification?

No. Google ownership attributes are self-reported by the business. They are not the same as MBE, WBE, VOSB or other certifications. If your program requires certification, use Outpost Leads to build the list, then confirm certification with the certifying body.

What does "verified" mean?

A verified Google Business Profile is one whose owner has confirmed to Google that they manage it. A profile that isn't verified may have no active owner, which is often why its details are incomplete or out of date.
